Our school offers the Reading Recovery Programme to children who are identified from the 6 year old Observation Survey. This programme involves a daily 30 minute session of individual help in reading and writing. A home programme to practice skills is involved.
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL ABILITIES
Children with Special Abilities who are identified early in their schooling, are given opportunities in class programmes to extend their abilities and participate in a number of exciting and challenging programmes, such as Australasian English, Math's and Science competitions and problem solving challenges. Small groups of children work with Teacher Aides on “Extension” activities.
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Children with Special Needs are catered for in a variety of ways. The Board of Trustees employs support staff who work alongside children with special needs in the classroom. Discretionary support hours are also applied for from the Ministry of Education for some children with very high needs. Tauhei Combined School works closely with the Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour and parents in setting up and implementing individual education programmes for some of our special needs children. Outside agencies are involved where appropriate.
EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Every student is given opportunities each year to participate in activities which involve learning outside the class room that supports the curriculum. We have class and school trips. These are a valuable extension of the class programmes. Parent help on such excursions is essential and any offer of transport or supervision at these times is greatly appreciated. On these excursions seat belts must be used by all children. Each year the senior class attends a camp. Every effort is made to maximise parent involvement. Fundraising for this camp takes place on Livestock Day.
